Native Americans
1). Not to screw up the naming from the Indians from India or "Dots" I like to call them while Native Americans are the "feathers" (Two nicknames I came up with on my own!).
2). They are Native to America and are the first known population to live in the land we now call today the USA.
Collectively as Indians, American Indians, Native Americans or by their tribe's name.
It is rude and insulting to Native Americans when people use this term.

Columbus called the Native Americans Indians, because he thought he was in India when he arrived in America. The name stuck, and we still call them Indians today.
Personal preference, really. Depending upon which tribe you are from or your political views, you might prefer Indians, Native Americans or American Indians. It really doesnt make a whole lot of difference.
Another name for Indians is Natives, or Native Americans if they come from America. However, the best name for Indians is" Indigenous" people meaning they are the natural inhabitants of the land.

Native Americans were not from India. They are native to America, hence the name. The term Indians is a historical mistake due to Colombus thinking he was in India when he arrived in the Americas. The term has stuck, though everyone knows the Americas are not India.
