Industrialisation, as generally understood, started in Great Britain in the 1800s. Engineers learned the principles of thermodynamics and applied them.
People such as Trevethick, Newcomen and Watt, and many others developed steam engines to be the prime movers for mass production. Particularly, and principally, for the manufacture of cloth. Factories and fortunes were built on cotton initially. That is not to say that other manufacturing problems were ignored.
Other countries, seeing the benefits or realising the potentials, followed suit and even surpassed in some aspects what started.
It also improved transportation overland and sea. Railways, shipping etc.
