It's all about ratings. TV networks in the US are commercial; they rely on advertising to support them. That means they live and die by ratings. If they get good ratings (lots of viewers), they can then charge sponsors more money for running their advertisements. So, networks will feature programs they know will get a lot of viewers. Like it or not (and many TV critics do not like it), features like "Shark Week" draw large numbers of viewers. Perhaps people like to be scared, perhaps they are fascinated by sharks, but as long as Shark Week keeps bringing in lots of viewers, you will continue to see it on the Discovery Channel (and you will also continue to see critics wondering why Discovery keeps doing it).

The Outer Limits. It was a science fiction and fantasy show loosely copying the formula of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone.
According to USA Today, The Daily Show averaged roughly 1 Million Viewers per night during 2003-2004. During 2008 the New York Post reported that viewership held roughly 2 Million Viewers per night. The Obama Interview held in October of 2008 drew in about 3.8 Million viewers. Obviously for a television show that is on the air four nights a week, the average viewership will fluctuate from year to year and even month to month. Currently, for the 2010 year the TV Nielson Ratings reported that the Daily Show is bringing in about 1.6 to 1.8 Million viewers per episode, with the Median age of the viewer being around age 35. It is also noted that Stewart does tend to appeal to younger audiences, though obviously with a Median age of 35 the show is certainly not exclusive to this age bracket.
