The Catholic colony was Maryland, aptly named for the much venerated mother of God. The heart of the Catholic Church in America has long been Baltimore, of Baltimore Catechism fame.

Correction:

The charter that Lord Baltimore received from King Charles I of England specified a name for the new colony. It was to be called Maryland to honor King Charles' wife Queen Henrietta Maria (Queen Mary).

The colony of Maryland founded by Cecil Calvert 2nd Baron Baltimore was meant to be a haven for Catholics. Lord Baltimore was himself a Catholic and religious freedom was a founding value in his colony. The city of Baltimore is the oldest Catholic Diocese in the United States.
