As a general rule all abolitionists would have stood against it. Quakers would oppose it. Frederick Douglass spoke out against it. Catholics opposed it, with the exception of Irish Catholics who were in direct competition with blacks in the job market. Marylanders and Louisiana Catholics were pro slavery and other exceptions also existed.
