For many businesses, they may have hundreds of computers that need to connect to the internet. In order to do this, they need each computer connected to a switch. The switch will forward frames within the Local Area Network (LAN) and anything that needs to be sent out to the Internet will be sent to the router. The main purpose of the switch is to connect many computers or nodes to one device which in turn connects to a router.
It faire simpel !
No - a router can connect to a computer, another router, a switch, a hub, a bridge or a modem. If you are connecting to the Internet via DSL or cable company you will need a modem/router to connect to them. You then attach your computer (or computers) to that router. Routers are useful because they make decisions about which way a packet of data goes - this network or this network? If you have one network that doesn't go anywhere (connect to the Internet or another network) a router is of no use to you and a switch generally does wonderfully and is cheaper than a router.
You need to have a wireless router compatible with your wireless adapter and LAN cable of CAT-5 at least. Use the cable to connect the modem and the router, use WAN port of the router. After that configure the router for your needs. And you are ready to go.
The wireless router that I have needs to have a wired connection to the internet service and then devices can have a connection without a cable to the router.
You are supposed to connect an ethernet cable from the modem to whatever device that needs an online connection and if you have 2 or more items connect the router to the modem with an ethernet cable and then connect the devices to the router with ethernet cables
A router allows for internetwork communication. You can also use a switch implementing VLANs, STP, and VTP. But this method is rather tedious because you have to configure each used port on each switch. I would go into a full description, but if I did, I would be here for 3 days.
The 'internet' is global system of interconnected computer networks. Home computers connect to the internet using a router. If you have a wireless router, the PS Vita has its own wi-fi capabilities, and can connect to the internet via your router. There is also a 3g version which can connect via the 3g network, but that needs a sim card and a subscription, like a mobile phone.
The router is the brains of the network, it hands out the IP address's to all the devices and controls where the different information needs to go. All the switch does is route the calls to the right devices. If you talking about an Ethernet Switch then all it is is a smart hub. It's like a switch board operator on your phone, if computer 1 want's to talk to computer 3 then it routes the call through just to #3 and no one else. It does this automatically. Most routers already have a 4 port ethernet switch built in, if you need more ports then you can buy a 4, 8,16, etc, port stand alone one of your choice.
At least you will need a router even if you have a modem. If you get the router from your provider, all the configuration may be done automatically. If not, it may be possible that you have to configure the router by yourself. In this case it needs the credentials in order to get access to the internet. How to configure the router is explained in its user-manuals.a DSL/cable router
