The Declaration of Independence is seen as one of the greatest proclamations of rights and freedoms ever written. However, this proclamation didn't include everyone living in the United States. It noticeably left out slaves and women from the rights listed.
Slaves in the US were only much later recognized as having the same inalienable rights as those who wrote the Declaration in 1776. Slavery as an institution was only eliminated during the US Civil War (1861-1865).
Native Americans were also not accorded their rights even when they submitted to the authority of the US government. Their cultures became marginalized because they could not adopt the ways of the Europeans.
