Systemic lupus accounts for approximately 70 percent of all cases of lupus. In approximately half of these cases, a major organ, such as the heart, lungs, kidneys or brain, will be affected. Cutaneous lupus (affecting only the skin) accounts for approximately 10 percent of all lupus cases. Drug-induced lupus accounts for about 10 percent of all lupus cases and is caused by high doses of certain medications. The symptoms of drug-induced lupus are similar to systemic lupus; however, symptoms usually subside when the medications are discontinued.

Nodules can happen in about 30% of RA Cases. these can either be sore or not.I did a bit of a search on this and found that quite a few people with lupus problems do have problems with nodules. And that they are often described as Rheumatoid nodules. Some of these are hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), steroids (both antin-inflammatory and immunsuppressive), mycophenoloate mofetil (Cellcept), methotrexate, azathioprine (Imuran), cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan). If the lupus patient has any of the lupus clotting factors, blood thinners like coumadin are added to the treatment regimen. Recent research shows that lupus patients are twice as likely as the general population to experience cardiovascular events so some doctors are also prescribing statins. Attention to a healthy diet, an exercise program, stress management and avoiding UVA and UVB light are useful tools in managing lupus.

Involvement of other body systems is less common but does occur. Lupus frequently occurs in overlap with other autoimmune conditions. In those cases, it is difficult to determine which disease is causing which damage.

Lupus nephritis, or lupus that affects the kidney, occurs in about 40% of systemic lupus cases. Either the immune system mistakenly attacks the kidneys or immune complexes from autoimmune activity elsewhere in the body get deposited in the kidneys, causing inflammation. The result is that the person "spills" protein and cellular casts into the urine. Protein is supposed to be filtered out of the urine and returned to the blood. There are no symptoms of lupus nephritis in the early stages. In progressive stages the patient may have an increase in blood pressure and equal swelling in both lower extremities. Regular urinalysis is the best way to catch lupus nephritis early when it is easiest to treat. The specific type of lupus nephritis is determined by a kidney biopsy. The type or classification determines the treatment plan.
