The illuminated part of the Moon faces away from the Earth when it is in its "new" phase.
The new moon is the moon phase when the side facing Earth is completely dark and cannot be seen because the moon is between Earth and the sun.
New moon phase. The moon is between earth and the sun, so none of the lit surface of the moon can be seen by anyone on earth.
It is quite difficult to see the new moon, because it is so close to the Sun in the sky; unless you know just where to look, you probably won't see it.
It could be in any phase. If it is below the horizon, you can't see it.

The new Moon "phase" is when the Moon is (more or less) in front of the Sun. We cannot normally see the Moon in this phase. If the Moon is exactly in front of the Sun, the Moon covers the Sun and we see a solar eclipse.

We see the full moon {the phase}.

After a week from new moon, you'll see a half moon. This is more correctly called the First Quarter phase of the Moon.
