current Transformers used for relaying and metering purposes should ideally be installed on all three phases. For specific purposes, you may only use CT's on two phases, such as when implementing certain types of ground relaying, but even in this instance three phase CT's are necessary for phase to phase fault protection. I know it is sometimes a utility practice to only meter off of two phases, as long as system voltages and currents are well balanced.

Explain differancnce between instrument current transformer and measuring current transformer?

Current transformer is a device used to measure the flow of current through a power system and the measured current is inputted to a protective relay system. It is used to detect system malfunction. Current transducer is a device used to measure AC and DC current based on the halt-effect technology.

What is a transformer and its functions?

Voltage transformer or potential Transformers are used in conjunction with Current transformers for metering and protection purpose in HT and LT power system.

What is meaning of apparent power in transformer?

Apparent power is the product of voltage and current in an a.c. system, and is expressed in volt amperes. The rated apparent power of a transformer is the product of its rated secondary current and rated secondary voltage.

Difference between and rcd and an isolating transformer?

An rcd is a device designed to limit duration of electrical shock by disconnecting the circuit when a fault is detected. An isolation transformer is a 1 to 1 (same voltage and current in and out) transformer that keeps one part of an electrical system physically unconnected to another part of the system. It does this by using the principle of a transformer to allow current flow, without actually connecting the load to the source wires.

How current transformer measure current?

A current transformer doesn't 'measure current'. It merely reduces a large current flowing through its primary to a smaller current which can be read by an ammeter connected to its secondary. At the same time, it electrically isolates the secondary circuit from the primary circuit, which is essential if the primary circuit is part of a high-voltage system.

What are the factors affect the magnitizing inrush current in power transformer?

1- residual flux existing before enegizing the transformer . 2- size of transformer . 3- size of power system. 4- type of magnetic material of the core. 5- the method of energizing the transformer.

What is the purpose of a high voltage transformer?

if the transformer is distributing transformer then we shoud have to give more prefer to the high volatage to reduce losses if we distibute power at low volage there is more current which causes more losses and in hv system there is high volage and low is current so the losses are also low

How do you calculate current on delta to star transformer?

To calculate the current on a delta to star transformer, first identify the line current in the delta configuration (I_line). The phase current in the star (wye) configuration (I_phase) can be calculated using the formula: I_phase = I_line / √3. This relationship arises because the line current in a delta system is √3 times the phase current in a star system. Therefore, knowing the line current allows you to easily find the phase current in the star configuration.

What factor cause spill current on external fault in case of transformer differential protection?

Spill current during an external fault in transformer differential protection is primarily caused by the unequal impedance in the transformer windings and the connected power system. When an external fault occurs, the fault current flowing through the transformer can create a differential current between the primary and secondary windings due to their differing voltage drops and phase shifts. Additionally, the presence of harmonics and the effects of CT (current transformer) saturation can further contribute to this spill current, complicating the differential relay's ability to distinguish between internal and external faults.

What is a Current Reversing Transformer?

This is a transformer built into electrical appliance to make electricity meter to stop reading or made to read in reverse order. This reduces the consumption reading and cheats the system. That is bad.

What is the difference between protective current transformer and metering currrent transformer?

Usually nothing. The only difference is what it is connected to and operates. The leads from the current transformer could power a meter for remote indication or a protective relay to trip the system offline.
