Most if not all phone carrier will allow you to port your number over to another phone carrier. You just need to request a PUC code from them in order to take your number to another carrier. Vodafone, O2, T-mobile, Orange and many more all offer this service.

Is there really no way of keeping your current cell phone number and switching phone carriers if it's from another state than where you're currently living?
The practice is called Local Number Portability. Hence the name, you can't use it if the number would not be local (i.e. if it is in a different area code from you when you want to switch carriers).

If in Ireland I assume you mean the mobile phone provider. However unlike old times mobile carriers are not bound to number ranges. Three.ie used to own 083 but now with number portability other carriers can own these numbers too. For example I am but am with Three. Ie

Yes, make sure you tell them right away (when you change carriers). I've kept the same number for over 6 years now & I have been with 3 different carriers. You just have to make sure you tell them when you are changing carriers. Most companies ask you if you want to bring your current number with you. They will handle everything for you, all you need to do is call them & sit back and relax. Also, make sure you do not cancel your current cell phone account until your number has been ported. If you do this, you will lose your number. Also, if you are switching to an unlimited plan, you may be able to get a great deal on your phone.
