A metaphor is a literary device by which an attribute is given, through a figure of speech, to something that can't have it in a literal sense. An example is Haemon telling Theban King Creon that he who keeps the sheet of his sail taut and never slackens it upsets his boat and finishes his voyage with keel. Here, the haughty ruler is compared to a sailor who never furls the sail of his boat.
