Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson lead opposing political parties because they had radically different views of the role of the central government. Hamilton lead the Federalist Party, which believed in a strong central government ruled by the wealthy elite; Thomas Jefferson lead the Democratic-Republican Party(originally called the Anti-Federalists), which placed greater emphasis on states' rights.
