The Whigs.
Adams became a leader of the Whigs after he was President.
The Whigs grew out of the National Republicans who supported John Quincy Adams. They were former Federalists, eastern businessmen, and some southern planters. The Democrats grew out of those who supported Andrew Jackson.
Northern Whigs became Republicans, Southern Whigs became Democrats
A large percentage of the Whigs in the Northern states joined the new Republican party. The short-lived Constitutional Union party was the mostly made up of former Whigs from the South and remnants of the old Know-nothing party.
The Whigs were never banned or disallowed but they split over slavery, lost their political base and won the presidency for the last time in 1848. The new Republican party absorbed a lot of former Whigs.
