ANSWER:

The Roman Catholic Church believe that Saint Peter, whom Jesus appointed as the chief of His twelve apostles was the first pope and that there is an unbroken line of successors to the the Chair of Saint Peter in Rome. This is not necessarily so, as from Saint Peter's election in 48 AD through to 1449 AD, that line was broken several times. This occurred for various reasons: Quite often the Church became embroiled in political affairs to the point that different European countries no longer acknowledged a particular pope and elected another, often referred to as an "antipope". The Church was also plagued by many "heresies" during this time and if the pope moved to quell such heresies, he often made himself unpopular and was forced to abdicate. There is a list of forty-four popes who were either expelled, resigned, or abdicated. The names of these popes are too numerous to list here.

Clarification:

The first pope to be expelled was Peter. Emperor Claudius, who ruled Rome from 41 to 54AD, tired of all the fighting between Orthodox Jews and Christianized Jews and forced them all out of Rome, including Peter. It is thought that Peter reigned from Antioch in exile until Nero lifted the ban a few years later when he returned to Rome. Mind you, Peter was not expelled from the Church. He was simply told to leave Rome by the emperor.
