Arthur assumed the presidency on September 19, 1881, after Garfield succumbed to wounds inflicted by an assassin's bullet. His administration focused on civil service reform and modernizing the U.S. Navy. Arthur served until March 4, 1885, when he was succeeded by Grover Cleveland.
