He was appointed General-in-Chief of the Union armies in March 1864, and took the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox in April 1865.

He was US President for two terms - 1869-1877.

Ulysses S. Grant was elected to the US presidency in 1868. As an aside, President Lincoln has selected US Grant to be lieutenant general after being certain that Grant had no political aspirations.

This proved to be incorrect.
