Grover Cleveland is both the 22nd and 24th US President.
He was elected President in 1884. Seeking re-election in 1888, he obtained a majority of the popular vote but was beaten in the electoral college by Republican candidate Benjamin Harrison. Ironically, this was because Cleveland narrowly lost his home state of New York. In 1892, Cleveland beat Harrison in both the popular vote and the electoral college to win a second non-consecutive term, the only President to do so.
Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and Richard Nixon were all serious presidential candidates who received electoral votes one time before they were elected.
Others such as Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and Lyndon Johnson unsuccessfully vied for the nomination before finally winning it.
Richard Nixon lost in 1960, but won in 1968 and 1972.

Ford was never elected President OR Vice-President. Including Barack Obama, a total of 43 people have served as U.S. President. The reason why President Obama is referred to as the 44th President is that President Cleveland is counted twice due to his terms as President being non-consecutive.
