The passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906 is most closely associated with the efforts of muckrakers, who exposed problems in the meatpacking and food industries through investigative journalism. This legislation aimed to improve food safety and regulate the sale of certain products to protect consumers.

Meat Inspection Act of 1906
He hoped to protect the trust from public attack.
Theodore Roosevelt was a progressive Republican and he was willing to reform government systems he believed were corrupt. In this case, a group of investigative journalists called the Muckrakers discovered and wrote about major problems with the inspection of meat, and with the quality of certain patent medicines. Thanks to the courageous reporting of the Muckrakers, especially Upton Sinclair and Samuel Hopkins Adams, President Roosevelt had all the incentive he needed to take action. He signed the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906; its purpose was to make sure that the ingredients in medications were safe and correctly labeled, and that all food inspectors did their job to protect the consumer by not allowing tainted meat to be sold.
The book contributed to the passage of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act.
