Obviously, reading any book will improve a child's learning skills. This is especially true of the Book of Mormon, which repeats many new vocabulary words for young readers and does not provide pictures from which to draw literary cues.
There have been many families who have taught their children to read using the Book of Mormon, and there are many books and programs available to help parents who choose to attempt this with their young children. However, I could not find any quote from any prophets who have directly said that reading the Book of Mormon will improve a child's reading skills. The prophets have encouraged families to read the scriptures or scripture stories to their young children, but have not claimed that it will improve their reading skills or teach them how to read.
Moroni was a prophet in the Book of Mormon. There are people alive today with the name Moroni, named after the Book of Mormon prophet.
The Book of Mormon does not say who the prophet Mormon's grandfather was. He does say that his father was also named Mormon, but we don't know much else about his family.
Thomas S. Monson is the prophet.
The Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) is also referred to as the President of the Church. He is properly addressed as 'President'; that is, his proper title is "President Monson", not "Prophet Monson".
Mormon isn't a person it's a religion. Joseph Smith, the first prophet of the Mormon church, was killed in 1844 by a mob; no one knows who really killed him.

No. "Mormon" is a nickname for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The nickname was originally given to them as a way to mock their belief in the Book of Mormon, but most members have embraced it. The name "Mormon" is from the Book of Mormon, which is said to have been transcribed by an ancient prophet named Mormon in about 300 A.D.
It was a term in the 1830's used primarily by Mormon Antagonists to refer the the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith. It was and still is considered offensive by most Mormons.
There are a couple Josephs mentioned in the Book of Mormon. The most prominent is the son of a prophet named Lehi, who left Jerusalem with his family in 600 b.c. He later took over the roll of prophet after the death of his brother, Nephi, who inherited the position from his father. The Biblical Joseph who was sold into Egypt is also mentioned several times in the Book of Mormon.
Interesting question it is sort of a maybe answer. The first 7 books in the Book of Mormon are written in the first person tense. The writing of the original author is there unedited. Several of the remaining books are abridgments (~Reader's Digest version so to say) where the Prophet Mormon takes the record and pulls out the religious parts of his people's history. in between the two sections Is a section called The Words of Mormon, where this Prophet Mormon explains all this (Just not in the modern tone like I tried to do). So that Words of Mormon could be roughly said to be an intermission.
