The word pilgrim describes a person of anyone of any religion who travels for their faith. The pilgrims who came to America were Christians who fled Europe because of religious persecution before the former leaders of Europe learned to care about God and people.

intolerance
After the protestant reformation religion, the Catholic Church really took a hit. The reason that spread to the colonies in America however is mostly because of puritans or *dissenters* persecution in England under James the first and his Acts of Uniformity. Originally they left for Holland, but it wasn't much better there and going to America seemed a logical next step. Religion in Europe was so divided that you were at risk for persecution no matter what religion you were. Thus, it was logical for them to go to America where there would be no persecution. (Though, that changed as different faiths showed up in the colonies)

The main right that spurred settlement in America was freedom of religion. Many came to the colonies from Europe after having been subjected to religious persecution of some sort. Many of the colonies were very tolerant of religion.
