After the protestant reformation religion, the Catholic Church really took a hit. The reason that spread to the colonies in America however is mostly because of puritans or *dissenters* persecution in England under James the first and his Acts of Uniformity. Originally they left for Holland, but it wasn't much better there and going to America seemed a logical next step. Religion in Europe was so divided that you were at risk for persecution no matter what religion you were. Thus, it was logical for them to go to America where there would be no persecution. (Though, that changed as different faiths showed up in the colonies)
