Since the western religions do not believe in any other deities, they capitalize the name God to show that this is the one and only Deity, and they do not use a definite article: to say "the god" would imply there are other gods, such as the gods and goddesses who were part of ancient Greece and Rome. So, in mythology, you will see "the god" -- as in: Zeus was king of the gods. But in the monotheistic religions, you will not see "the" or "a". You will just see the name "God," as in May God bless you and protect you.
