The first group of Mormon Pioneers arrived in what is now called Salt Lake City on July 24, 1847.
The Salt River Valley was the first valley to be settled, in 1867 by John Y. T. Smith. Phoenix Valley, also known as the Valley of the Sun, was settled in the mid-to-late 19th century by Brigham Young and a group of Mormons.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormons") migrated west and settled in what is now Utah (along with parts of Idaho, Arizona, Wyoming, and Nevada) and which then was part of Mexico. They arrived in 1847 and are still the dominant religious group in the area today.
