The principles of Roman law were fair, such as the law is the same for everyone and nobody is above the law. However, in practice its application was not necessarily fair. Elite people usually got away with it lightly, while the poor were punished harshly.

In principle Roman Law was fair. It stated that the law is equal for all citizens and nobody was above the law, and established the right to a proper judicial trial and the right to appeal and that the burden of proof rested on the accuser and not the accused. However, its application was not quite as fair. Usually the right got away with fines, while the poor were given harsh punishments.
