Valentine of Rome followed all the beatitudes but probably would be best known for "Where there is despair, hope." When the Roman Emperor Claudius II Gothicus made it illegal for couples to marry, I am sure that many of them despaired because of this. Valentine secretly conducted marriage ceremonies for these couples. This eventually led to his execution.
