In the second half, the gung-ho Confederate spirit was simply not winning any campaigns, and meanwhile Lincoln had rewarded Grant with the top job. This - and Grant's promotion of Sherman and Sheridan - finally swung Union victory.

∙ 9y agoIt is generally conceded the south had the better generals overall. Although the north had many good commanders, few reached the status of such men as Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Jeb Stuart, James Longstreet, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Joe Johnston and Wade Hampton.
Some notable US generals are US Grant, WT Sherman, Winfield Hancock, George Meade, Phil Sheridan.
