: I haven't found my list of them...but generally it is a small number of s scattered states... CT and Mass, as well as Washington state. A few more have business personal property taxes...where either the exemptions on personal property are so extreme it amounts to, or is specifically required, to be something owned for business use.

Many States that had them have eliminated them as they are very costly to administer, frequently unevenly distributed or assessed and exceptionally visible and disliked...and are generally all done so at a local level.

It makes little difference in a way, because whatever funds were raised by it, are then raised by another tax. Hnece some other rate goes up.

Does depreciation reduce the personal property tax?

Depreciation can reduce the assessed value of personal property and thereby reduce the personal property tax, if the tax rate stays the same. Most states have a minimum rate in their depreciation tables where the depreciated value of the personal property will remain as long as you still own the property. Ask your local personal property assessor about depreciation tables as they also vary by type of personal property.

Do you have to pay property tax on a trailer?

Yes, in most states in the United States you will pay either a personal property tax or real property tax on a trailer (also known as mobile home or manufactured home). Each state defines what constitutes personal property or real property as the terms relate to mobile homes but typically a mobile home that is permanently fixed to the site is considered real property. If you own land where a temporary mobile home has been placed you could receive a real property tax bill for the land and a personal property tax bill for the mobile home.

Do you pay sales tax on labor in Iowa?

All sales of tangible personal property in Iowa are subject to sales tax unless exempted by state law. Sales of services are exempt from Iowa sales tax unless taxed (enumerated) by state law. Labor is not tangible personal property So what that means, is unless the labor is specifically enumerated as a taxable type of service, than labor is NOT taxable. see http://www.state.ia.us/tax/educate/78539.html#ExemptSales for a listing on labor that requires collection of state sales tax.

Do you pay sales tax in Florida on a dishwasher install?

The sale of a dishwasher is taxable. The install labor charged when purchasing a dishwasher would also be subject to sales tax. If you purchased install services from a third party that provided no tangible personal property during the installation, then there would be no sales tax on those services. One practical exception - When you purchase a new home and it includes a dishwasher, then this generally is ignored by the taxing authority (the FL DOR expects the general contractor to pay the tax). The reason for the tax is that the dishwasher is very easily removed with no damage to the house. So it is still considered tangible personal property after it is installed. If we were talking about a home appliance that was more permanently attached to the home, then the appliance and install services would not be subject to sales tax. In other words, real property improvements are not subject to sales tax but tangible personal property sales (and install labor sold with the property) is subject to tax.
