Drought: Most northern states are in the vicinity of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts; especially vulnerable are those with pastures and agricultural activities that could be affected during a persisting drought. These include Sonora, Chihuahua, San Luis Potosi or Zacatecas.
Flooding: The states of Veracruz, Tabasco and Campeche are prone to flooding, especially during hurricane season.
Earthquakes: All of western Mexico lies on the subduction fault between the North American and Cocos tectonic plates. This means earthquakes and active volcanoes are found throughout the zone. Some states along western Mexico include Baja California, Sonora, Sinaloa, Guerrero and Oaxaca.
Violence: The current War on Drugs (2006-) has taken its toll on Mexico's society, with over 70,000 dead since the conflict began. This violence however, is limited to major routes of transport and distribution of illegal narcotics into the United States. Some states affected by the violence include Nuevo Leon, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Sinaloa.
