Atoms of the same element with different atomic masses are known as isotopes. Isotopes differ only by the number of neutrons present in the nucleus of the isotopes. The number of protons is the same for all isotopes of an element (because if there were different numbers of protons, then the atoms would not be of the same element).

What causes illness for the people who were exposed to the Atomic bombs was that the radiation produced from the emitted alpha particles can burn the skins and then penetrate it to cause permanent mutation inside the cells. Depending on what individual cells) is damaged, it can cause diseases such as cancer, which can kill.

A good deal of additives cause isotopes in your body called 'free radicals'. These isotopes can cause some very dangerous disorders, including cancer.
