An acid is a proton donor. Acids give the molecules they react with protons, e.g H+ions. To find out if a chemical is an acid, simply add some universal indicator to the acid. If the colour changes from green to red yellow or orange, then the chemical tested is an acid with a pH between 1 and 7.
