The Periodic Table does not list substances, but elements.
To explain further, the substance carbon dioxide contains the elements carbon and oxygen. It does not contain the substance oxygen (which would mean dioxygen gas -- O2 ). Similarly, the substance carbon could mean any or all of graphite, diamond, coke, or charcoal, but it is not contained in carbon dioxide.
