mac-address
A device or computer gets their MAC address from their Network Interface Card (or NIC). This is not something that a user is able to change (See discussion as to why you can change your MAC address). However an IP address can be statically assigned to you which means a network administrator has physically typed out what your IP address and subnet mask is. Another way to get an IP address is through Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, or DHCP as it is most commonly known as.
When applying IPv4 addresses to router interfaces on a network, you would manually configure predictable addresses. For example, the lowest or highest address of the local subnet, on each particular router interface.
172.16.200.18
if an address conflict is detected, the address is removed from the pool for an amount of time configurable by the administrator.

Switch(config)# ip default-gateway 192.168.1.254Switch(config)# interface vlan 1Switch(config-if)# ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0Switch(config-if)# interface fa0/1Switch(config-if)# switchport access vlan 1
To configure a GRE tunnel, create a tunnel interface by issuing the interface tunnel command from the global configuration mode. To configure the tunnel source and destination, issue the tunnel source {ip-address | interface-type} andtunnel destination {host-name | ip-address} commands under the interface configuration mode for the tunnel.
interface serial x/x ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x no shut clock rate xxxxxxx end
Configure a static route on R1 using the IP address of the serial interface on R1. Configure a default route on R1 with the exit interface Fa0/0 on R1. Configure a static route on R1 using the IP address of S0/0/0 on R2. Configure a default route on R1 using the IP address of Fa0/0 on R2.
ALSwitch(config)# interface vlan1 ALSwitch(config-if)# ip address 192.168.10.2 255.255.255.0
Configure an IP address on the relevant network interface and bring it up. Configure a password on at least on vty line and give the login command.
Configure routing protocol authentication.
router(config-if)#
I depends on the manufacturer and model. 192.168.0.0 or 192.168.0.1 are fairly common, but there can be many others.

A layer 2 switch may need an IP address if the operator wishes to be able to access it without a serial cable. With an IP address, the switch can be access from anywhere with a connection to the network or an Internet connection.
