Seeds need adequate water to soften the seed coat and activate enzymes for growth, oxygen for respiration to provide energy, suitable temperature for enzyme activity, and in some cases, light signals for the seeds to start growing.
Grass seeds are alive. They contain an embryonic plant which survives by using the endosperm in the seed for nourishment until they are planted and start growing.
