There are actually four American Presidents to have won the electoral college votes, but lost the popular vote. They are John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, and George W. Bush.
Benjamin Harrison, Rutherford B. Hayes, and George W. Bush were the three Preidents who were elected by the Electoral College, although the had less popular votes than their opponents.
The presidents either died or resigned, and their vice presidents took office, or the vice presidents were elected on their own.
Three presidents have received at least 520 electoral votes in the following elections: 1936 when FDR got 523, 1972 with Nixon receiving 520 and 1984 with Ronald Reagan getting 525. On a side note, in all cases the Presidents were first term incumbents.
