What is meant by lafting?

Lafting (laft or lafteverk) is a traditional Norwegian method for constructing houses out of logs. It was the dominant way of building wooden houses in Norway from the Viking era to the middle of the 19th century. The logs are stacked horizontally, the length of the logs thus determining the length/breadth of the house, with the ends of each log crossing the end of the logs perpendicular to it, resulting in the characteristic protrusions on each corner as the logs continue further than the wall. The logs are fitted with groves on each end so that they will fit together, and, thus, nails are not required for this method of construction.
