POP (Post Office Protocol) - The protocol that an e-mail server and client usewhen the client requests the downloading of e-mailmessages.
The POP protocol, by default, downloads messages to your computer and then deletes them from the mail server. If you leave all of your email on a primary computer (for example, your office computer) but want to have access to recently received email on a secondary computer (a home computer), you should leave your messages on the server for a limited period of time.
Hotmail runs on the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP ) which moves email messages from one server to the next. The actual type of servers used to store the emails is not disclosed.
Internal email is electronic mail that only uses a company's internal mail servers. External email makes use of two or more mail servers as the mail is routed, the originating server and the destination server.
IM (Instant Messaging) is an online chat capability between two known parties who are both logged in to the IM facility and send real time messages to each other. There are multiple IM programs and protocols that are not compatible with each other although some IM programs have extensions that allow communicating with other protocols. There are some IM standard protocols but none are universally excepted. Email has been around much longer than IM and there is a single standard email protocol (SMTP -Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) that is used for routing mail messages between mail servers. Mail servers are machines and software that receive your email, locate the destination server and route the message to it. If the server is not available for some reason, mail will be held for a while (maybe a few days) until the server is available. Once it arrives at the destination server it will be held until retrieved by your computer email program. The mail servers are not the program used on your computer for email. Email is sent and received with an email program such as Microsoft mail (or outlook or live mail), Mozilla Thunderbird, Pegasus Mail, Eudora, Opera mail or a web based mail programs such as gmail, yahoo Mail, Aol, Mail, etc. The stand alone mail programs will usually use SMTP to send an email to a mail server and can use either POP3, or IMAP (or MAPI) to retrieve emails from a mail server. There are many email programs and they can all send and receive emails from each other because they all follow the standard email protocols. Email is not done real time, although it looks like email messages arrive at their destination almost immediately, and you do not need to be running an email program (or have the computer turned on) for an email to be sent and received. The email is stored at the email server until retrieved by your email program and depending on how you retrieve the email message it may be kept there until you intentionally delete it.
Outlook is just Microsoft's email reading/downloading program. You can set it to leave a copy of the messages on the server, and then you can access the server by going to your email provider's website. your email provider is windows live mail, gmail or anything like that. ~artifex~
Only if u control the mail server...
When an email is sent, it is usually converted into a stream of data. The data in question is usually stored in what is called the packets. The packets usually includes the routing instructions to the address that a given email is to be delivered.
SMTP:-SMTP, Abbreviated from of simple mail Transfer Protocol. Is an internet standard used to transfer email messages between two server across Internet Protocols networks.A majority of email system use SMTP to send email messages.SMPT is "PUSH" Protocol and so, it can't "PULL" the email message from a remote server.Functions:-SMPT Perform two important function to enable the clients to send email message to any other exiting email address.SMTP verifies whether the person using SMPT server to send email message has the right to do so.SMTP delivers the message to the specified destination and checks whether the messages are delivered successfully. If the message aren't delivered successfully, SMPT notifies, the sender through an error message and sends the undelivered message back to the sender.
