Lyster Ormsby, a member of the Bondi Surf Bathers Lifesaving Club in Sydney, Australia invented the first life saving reel in 1906. The original design was intended for a lifesaver wearing a belt, with a rope attached, to reach a distressed swimmer, and be pulled back to the beach by his fellow lifesavers. A better working model based on this design was built by Sgt John Bond of Victoria Barracks in Paddington. This was later improved upon by Sydney coachbuilder G H Olding.
