South Africa is a country located at the very south end of the continent of Africa. It is a large country and is arguably considered the economic powerhouse of the African continent. It is known officially as The Republic of South Africa, or RSA for short. South Africa has neighbouring countries Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Lesotho, which all together form the Southern African region. South Africa's most famous statesman was Nelson Mandela, who was the country's first democratically elected president in 1994. Prior to 1994 South Africa was notorious around the world for its oppressive and abusive race separation system, called Apartheid, which was used to forcibly control the 'non-white' majority population for the economic benefit of the white minority ruling class.
