Large irrigation channels losses more water by evaporation.

If there is not enough rain, then additional water (i.e., irrigation) is required.

By applying slow amounts of water to the soil over a long period of time, the soil can absorb the water more quickly. It is the most direct form of irrigation, by applying water where only it needs it less is wasted and results in reduced water. By applying it slowly there is more time for the plant to soak up the water before evaporation.
In some deserts the water disappears as it is diverted to irrigation for crops and for municipal water supplies. Some of the water simply evaporates or is absorbed by the dry soil.
Answer: 40% id irrigation. The most water is used for irrigation.
Depending on the crop grown, a subsurface drip system is the most water efficient irrigation system as it delivers water directly to the root zone and experiences virtually no wastage from evaporation or run off. The most efficient subsurface system is Subsurface Textile Irrigation which uses up to 60% less water than surface irrigation and 30% less than conventional subsurface drip irrigation. Subsurface Textile Irrigation has a long life span, requires less maintenance, is simple to retrofit and is the safest way to use recycled water as it disperses the water undergound and there is no tunneling of water to the surface. STI is used throughout the world to irrigate crops, sports fields, public parks and gardens and even residential back yards and green roofs.

Drip irrigation is one of the most efficient forms of irrigation. It saves a significant amount of water when compared to traditional irrigation systems.
Irrigation is the act of moving water to water crops and for drinking water. In most cases aqueducts are used to do this.
