Cortisol is a steroid hormone. It is specifically a glucocorticoid that is produced by the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex in response to stress and a low level of blood glucose. It's functions are to increase blood sugar, suppress the immune system, and aid in the metabolism of fat, protein, and carbohydrate. It also decreases bone formation. Cortisol is not to be confused with hydrocortisone, which is used as a medication.
Sterol is the type of lipid
Steroids and fat-soluble vitamins are classified as derived lipid since they can be inactivated by saponification reaction, the structure therefore is not ester type but it is an alcohol type.
I could be wrong but a vitamin is not a lipid. A lipid is a fat. Vitamin A could be a fat soluble vitamin, but I am not sure if it is. According to my Chem book, Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin and is classified as a lipid. The lab book says to puncture a vitamin A capsule or use cod liver oil, so my guess is it is a triacylglycerol, i.e. an oil.
