All permanent data on a computer is stored on the Hard Drive Disk (HDD). This piece of hardware is capable of storing several hundred gigabytes of information.

Like all things though, hard drives are susceptible to wear and damage and are prone to failing. People often lose all of their data when this happens and it is very difficult to recover it. This is why it is important to perform backups onto separate hard drives regularly.

store perminent info on ROM Read Only Memory such as a CDR.

Read Only Memory.

It does however require some means of initially putting the data in. However the important thing is that erasing, changing, or writing these memories is significantly slower and more difficult to do than reading these memories is.

  • some early ROMs required people (usually women) to "wire" the data in
  • the first semiconductor ROMs the data was entered during fabrication via the masks used to make the chip
  • some semiconductor ROMs could be written once by blowing fuses using a special programmer machine
  • erasable ROMs were first introduced using UV light to erase them then the special programmer machine could write new data
  • electrically erasable ROMs allowed them to be erased and rewritten without removal from the board
  • modern Flash memories are a form of electrically erasable ROM
