I think most standards are designed to replace multiple previous standards, but the 'port' you are talking about might be USB, which actually stands for 'Universal Serial Bus'.
The USB standard includes many devices classes, so it has become a popular replacement for lots of different previous standards, (Eg RS-232, PS2, Parallel).
