The density. Refraction occurs at the boundary between two media of differing densities, such as air and water.
Reflection happens only at the interface between two media, and two media with the same index of refraction act as if they were a single medium. Thus, at the interface between media with the same index of refraction, there is no reflection, and the ray keeps going straight. Continuing this line of thought, it is not surprising that we observe very little reflection at an interface between media with similar indices of refraction.
It occurs when light traveling from one medium to another is completely reflected at the boundary between the two materials. The angle of incidence must be over a certain value (depending on the optical properties of the materials at the boundary).
A node is a point along a standing wave where the wave has minimal amplitude. The opposite of a node is an antinode, a point where the amplitude of the standing wave is a maximum. These occur midway between the nodes. Examples of a type of boundary could be the attachment point of a string, the closed end of an organ pipe or a woodwind pipe, the periphery of a drumhead, or a transmission line with the end short circuit. In this type, the amplitude of the wave is forced to zero at the boundary, so there is a node at the boundary, and the other nodes occur at multiples of half a wavelength from it: 0, λ/2, λ, 3λ/2, 2λ, ... One wavelength has 3 nodes and 2 antinodes. Between two nodes is the distance of half the wavelegth.
Tornadoes require severe thunderstorms to form. Such storms usually occur along a boundary between warm, moist air and either cool air, dry air, or a combination of the two. Tornadoes also require wind shear, which is where wind speed and direction vary with altitude. By a somewhat complicated process this wind shear gives storms the rotation they need to produce tornadoes. These rotating storms are called supercells.
