LEGO Mindstorms launched their first robot around 1994. I believe it was the LEGO RCX.
The LEGO Group In 1984 they formed a partnership with the Media Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1998 they created the LEGO MINDSTORMS RCX computer brick.
Actually, a lot. If you are buying this for a child, I recommend buying the NXT. These pieces may be a little bit small (ages 11+), but they hold together better, the NXT has much better interface, and the robot possibilities are much higher. With RCX, you use regular Lego bricks. And on the other hand, NXT uses special strong-lock bricks. Also NXT is compatible with Lego's newest building system. This uses metal pieces which are lightweight, sturdy, and completely safe. NXT is much, much better than RCX. Does this answer your question. On the other hand, the RCX comes with an infrared transmitter. You have to pay extra for one of those on NXT (via bluetooth). The RCX also has a better programming GUI. It is easier for beginners to understand.
Yes, but you will need a few of these RCX Motor Multiplexor http://mindsensors.com/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=58 RCX Sensor Multiplexor http://mindsensors.com/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=82 They run about 30USD each, but you can connect up to 4 motors/sensors to them.
The NXT is better because it is an updated version of the RCX. It comes with three motors and all-new sensors. Rcx is getting harder to use and thwe new NXT is much easier to use.
