In a 1991 Ford Taurus with a 3.0L engine, the thermostat should be installed with the spring side facing the engine block. This orientation ensures that the thermostat opens properly to allow coolant to flow when the engine reaches the designated temperature. Always make sure to replace the gasket and check for any leaks after installation.
Thermostats install into the housing with the spring-side towards the engine.See "Related Questions" below for more about Taurus / Sable thermostat installs.
If your 1997 Ford Taurus won't go into reverse, there may be a problem with your transmission. You can try checking your levels, but you need to take it to a mechanic.
I know that the spring goes towards the engine and on the 4.0 L - OHV engine the vent hole in the thermostat is at the top with the vertically mounted thermostat
The way it came out....
need diagram of the sepentine belt and how it go on.
The thermostat is located on the right hand side of the Radiator but to the bottom, you have an overflow, bypass and two other hoses that connect to the Thermostat housing. Things to note, only 2 bolts and it is off. The Thermostat can only go in 1 way and the default temp is 195.
I'm going to go way out on a limb here and say 1/2" or 7/16".

yes one way
Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine. The upper rad hose is attached to the thermostat housing at the engine. You need to drain some coolant out of the radiator, remove upper hose from thermostat housing, remove the bolts attaching the housing to the engine, remove the housing and remove the thermostat. Take note which way the thermostat comes out, you want the spring end to go inside block.
