You will have trouble plugging a 220 volt appliance into a 110 volt outlet because both have different polarities for the plug and receptacle that make it impossible for that action to happen.
Altering the plug isn't too good of an idea, as the voltage demand of the appliance would be too heavy for the wiring.

∙ 13y agoIt obviously depends greatly on the device, but in general, plugging a 110V device into a 220V unit will do more damage. Plugging a 220V device into 110V service in some devices will cause it to run slower, in some devices it will run at the appropriate speed, but will draw more amps and run hotter in which case it could be damaged if left un-checked. In many cases, plugging a 110V appliance into a 220V source will just cause it to fail immediately (fry a circuit board, blow a fuse, burst a capacitor etc).

∙ 11y agoDamage will be caused by using a 120 volt appliance on a 240 volt supply. The other way around, 240 volts on a 120 volt supply will cause the appliance to not operate at its designed efficiency. The wattage of the appliance will be reduced to 25% of the nameplate wattage that the appliance is rated at using the higher voltage.

Because all electrical supply systems are designed to A specific amperage delivery. If you are set up for 1000 amps 3 phase, That means that you are getting 350 amps each on three legs. If you put all your single phase (110volt) stuff on the same leg and have A total of 300 amps of draw then when you try to use several 110 volt items and A three phase piece you will draw too much power on one leg causing an overload. Even though you may only be using A total of 400 amps. Something will give, Most likely the fuse or breaker.
