There are many types of yarn used for crocheting. Wool is just one kind of yarn that you can use. It is used for really warmer clothing items and tends to be a little rougher on the skin and some people are allergic to it. The crochet pattern will tell you what kind of yarn you need to use, size of the hook etc.. Be careful to choose a pattern like a scarf if you are beginning to learn how to crochet as they tend to be easier. Don't choose a really bulky scarf because the yarn can become entangled in the hook, and can split up. Wool also is a yarn that shrinks when you wash it but there are a lot of patterns that require wool to make a felted finished product. Felting is crocheting or knitting a hat for example, and then washing it in a machine in hot water till it becomes felted. This is nice for beginners because when it shrinks up you cannot see the mistakes that you might make when you are just beginning. I have personally never felted anything. Whatever kind of yarn you are going to use you should buy enough yarn to finish the project. This is because the dye lots are not always the same color and if you run out of yarn your scarf could end up looking like 2 different colors. This happens if the dye lot isn't available that you started with? It is a good idea to keep the label that is around the yarn so that if you run out you can refer to the dye lot to see if they still have it in the store and also for instructions on how to care for the finished product. It is also important to buy enough yarn because it can sometimes be discontinued and you won't be able to finish your project if you run out of yarn. I have a website with a wide range of items that I crocheted that explain what kind of yarn I used to make them. I also list how to care for the items for example if they are machine wash and can be put in the dryer or need to be hand washed in cold water and dried flat. Any smooth, worsted weight yarn is good for learning to knit or crochet. You will want to be able to see what you're doing easily, so avoid lumpy or eyelash yarns until you get a feel for what you're doing. You will notice some difference in the feel of the yarn, some are more slippery (like rayons) than others (like wool), but in my experience it is more important to have something you enjoy holding and will enjoy using than how it slides on the hook.

How can keep crochet thread from raveling while crocheting?

To stop the thread from raveling while crocheting what you can do is put it in a small container so that your wool stays untangled while you work or you could put it in a plastic bag. This helps because there is a smaller opening to the yarn.

How many types are wool are there?

There are many different types of commercial wool available for knitting and crocheting. The types can be pure wool or wool blends. Each type of wool varies by the animal that the wool comes from (sheep, goats, alpaca, etc.), the grade/quality of the wool, how the wool was prepared/spun, and if the wool is blended with another material such as acrylic. Even with non-commercial wool there would be many variants based upon the type of animal that the wool came from, the grade/quality of the wool, how the wool was prepared and spun, the skill of the person preparing the wool. I have purchased home spun wool that varied greatly in thickness thoughout the entire skein making it difficult to use in a pattern where exact sizing is important.
