At the federal level, it was probably President Zachary Taylor in 1849. The Whig party operated in the USA during the period from the 1830s to the mid-1850s. It was briefly influential, but by the mid-1850s, it was almost totally defunct. The last Whig to serve as a US president was Millard Fillmore, from 1850-1853; he was not elected to that office, however. He was Zachary Taylor's vice president and assumed the presidency when Taylor (also a Whig) suddenly died. In 1851, Fillmore appointed the only Whig Supreme Court Justice, Benjamin R. Curtis. In the United States, the last member of the Whig Party to be elected to the office of US President was Millard Filmore. He was the 13th US President and served from 1850 to 1853. John Tyler. He took over for William Henry Harrison (Whig Party) after his death in 1841. Tyler (Whig/Democratic) was President from 1841-1845. This was ironic because Harrison chose Tyler to be his vice president to gain votes from the Democratic Party without having to follow their beliefs. He died within the first year, however, and Tyler, a Democratic Party member, took the Presidency.
He made three tries for the Whig nomination , in 1836,1848, 1852. He was twice offered the nomination for vice-president but refused. If he had accepted in 1848, he might have been president ,since the Whigs won the election and vice-president Fillmore took office after President Taylor died.
