Patricians they were the upper class, but only at the beginning of the city. As time went by a new class of businessmen rose and they were the merchants who more or less controlled trade. They were the Equites. The military, during the republic, was controlled by the consuls, who were both patrician and plebeian. during the principate the military was controlled by the emperor who could be from either class.
